Distinguished and Famous people from Cape Jervis
⚓ Matthew Flinders
Navigator Matthew Flinders named Cape Jervis on 23 March 1802 during his survey of Australia's southern coast. He chose the name in honour of the British naval figure John Jervis, Earl St Vincent. His association with the cape grew from that surveying voyage. The European name is only one layer of the place's history: the cape and surrounding coast already held significance for Aboriginal people long before his ship appeared. His charting helped establish the names through which later European shipping described the entrance to Backstairs Passage.
